Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has announced that it is launching a new US$1 million African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC) to help African journalism flourish in the digital age.
The venture has gained the assistance of a number of generous sponsors.
The Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) project will provide grants from US$12,500 to US$100,000 for projects aimed at strengthening and transforming African news media.
Julie Taylor, Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s head of communications for sub-Saharan Africa, said that, “Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is committed to working with journalists across Africa to help them use technologies to gather and tell important stories. Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is keen to help because we think the future is digital, and we want to see journalism flourish in the digital age”.
